TULLAHOMA ONE OF THE NATIONS TOP CITIES
Tullahoma has joined the ranks of 141 other communities that have been listed among the United States' best small cities by an online newsletter.
Demographics Daily on the [Bizjournals.com] Website has ranked
Tullahoma in a group of 141 dreamtowns out of 632 cities
with populations between 10,000 and 50,000.
Tullahoma was the only Tennessee city to make the list.
G. Scott Thomas, editor of Demographics Daily, explained
why the select communities made the coveted list.
``Life in metro areas often is hectic and confused, and
many people fear it's getting worse,'' he said. ``Millions
who live in big cities or suburbs dream of getting out.
``Our goal was to provide them a list of small cities that
offer relief from metropolitan hassles, and Tullahoma is
definitely on that list.''
Demographics Daily used 20 sets of statistics to rate each
city in eight categories, including:
-- Vitality.
-- Supply of good jobs.
-- Freedom from stress.
-- Connection to the cultural mainstream.
-- Support for schools.
-- Access to health care.
-- Low cost of living.
-- Small-town character.
Final scores were computed on a 100-point scale.
The top city on the list was Morgantown, W.Va., which
received a 100 score. Scores for the other 631 small cities
were based from that benchmark.
``Dreamtowns'' like Tullahoma received scores higher than
80.
``We found many types of dreamtowns around the country
ranging from resorts and state capitals to college
communities and good, old-fashioned small towns,'' Thomas
said. ``But all 141 have two things in common | their
quality of life is excellent, and they are safe, low-stress
alternatives to congested big cities and sprawling
suburbs.''
Tullahoma City Administrator Jody Baltz said it
is outstanding that Tullahoma has been included on the list.
``First of all, it's quite an honor to be so recognized,
but knowing Tullahoma, that's not surprising,'' he said.
``I say that because of all the things that take place in
Tullahoma | the culture, the community support, the great
school system.
``It's an honor for all the citizens who make up the
Tullahoma community.''
The list in the nearby area also included Frankfort, Murray
and Elizabethtown in Kentucky, Dalton and Statesboro in Georgia
and Opelika and Fairhope in Alabama.
In addition to Morgantown, the top 10 is comprised of
Owatonna, Minn.; Bozeman, Mont.; Columbus, Ind.; Oxford,
Miss.; Stillwater, Okla.; Minot, N.D.; Marshfield, Wis.;
Laramie, Wyo.; and Durango, Colo.
Demographics Daily is one of 48 online newspapers and
newsletters produced under the umbrella of Bizjournals.com,
the Internet service of American City Business Journals
Inc. of Charlotte, N.C. Forbes magazine this year honored
Bizjournals.com as one of ``The Best of the Web,'' naming
it one of the Internet's top 300 sites.
