Passing Routes

How I coach the passing game.
These are the routes I use.

Pop / Hitch / Slant / Post / Fade / Flag / Curl / Out-In / Drag / Flat

down routes are usually run when using play action over the top of the fake play
XO Pointers:
1 Receiver takes 3 steps and looks
2 Don't stop running
3 QB 1 step and throw
4 Can be run by any receiver

-------------------------------------------------------

Two tight split wing with I backfield hitch route run outside and hitch inside
XO Pointers:
1 Only receivers, split out, can run these routes.
2 Receivers tuck ball in outside arm use other to stiff arm.
3 Always try to run this play outside away from pursuit.
4 This ball should be thrown low if anything making it hard to intercept.

--------------------------------------------------------

Offense slant Pass Route Routes are good route for zone defenses Down Flag Curl Hook Play Pass Protection hitch down and out read reads
XO Pointers:
1 Slants have a steeper angle than a post.
2 Slants are assigned yardage. i.e.. 10 yard slant.
3 Slants are thrown off a 3 step drop.
4 Use these against zone coverage and aim between the zones.
5 Use these in man to man and run away from the coverage.
6 BO XO says: Gut check play. Free safeties love to see you coming. Do you have the guts.

----------------------------------------------------------

Offense use play action Pass Route Routes Down Pass Protection hitch down and out read reads
XO Pointers:
1 Post can be run by any receiver.
2 Posts are run on yardage also. QB throws to a spot where the receiver should be.
3 Post routes are thrown off a 5 step drop.
4 A receiver will not look until he is at least 10 yards up field.
5 The receiver should never stop running
6 Expect to get hammered by the free safety. This is a gut check for receivers. Some may be too skittish to play receiver. BO XO says if they can't run this route and keep their eye on the ball. Get me another receiver who can. Even if he's slow.

---------------------------------------------------------------

fades are great plays for tall recievers against man defences Set Sets Formation Pass Route Routes Down Flag Curl Hook Play Pass Protection hitch down and out read reads
XO Pointers:
1 Fades are similar routes to flags BUT Receivers look inside
and the QB throws from the pocket. Usually a 5 Step drop or off play action.
2 Throw the fade like a jump ball to a tall player.
3 This is a great route for play action and is recommended by BO the XO
4 This is also the end zone corner pass you see all the time. QB just throws the ball to the corner and the receiver make the play.

--------------------------------------------

Offense flag patterns good on zone defenses and agaiisnt run stopper strong safetyPass Protection hitch down and out read reads
XO Pointers:
1 Run the flag on sprint out's or roll out's.
2 Receiver looks outside for ball.
3 Run between zones and away from man coverage.

---------------------------------------------------------

Offense Formation Pass Route Routes Down Flag Curl Hook Play Pass Protection hitch down and out read reads
XO Pointers:
1 Curl routes are run on yardage. 10 yard curl. 15 yard and 20 yard.
2 Run these as curl in or out. In the pic above these are ten yard inside curls.
3 Run these routes and put pressure on the Linebackers to get deep in the zone.
4 Run like your going deep then pull up and turn on a dime.
5 BO XO says: Try these with a slant from the other side going across the zone.

---------------------------------------------------

Offense Set Sets Formation Pass Route Routes Down Flag Curl Hook Play Pass Protection hitch down and out read reads
XO Pointers:
1 Run these on yardage and use any receiver.
2 In this drawing quick end is running a 7 yard in and the strong  end is running a 7 yard out while the flanker-wing is running a 12 yard our.
3 These routes must be run with tight squares offs.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

drag route route on bootleg action Formation Pass Route Routes Down Flag Curl Hook Play Pass Protection hitch down and out read reads
XO Pointers:
1 Drag routes are run in a sneaky manner. Act like your blocking and then run like crazy.
2 Use the play on sprint outs or roll outs away from receiver.

-------------------------------------------------------

sprint out passing Down Flag Curl Hook Play Pass Protection hitch down and out read reads
XO Pointers:
