Shirley Majors
Shirley Majors and
Elizabeth
Bobo grew up, married, and lived in Lynchburg TN
home of Jack Daniels Whiskey. The home they lived in was torn down and replaced by the
Moore County public library. Shirley was a football coach and part time barber.
He coached the Moore County Raiders,
several years then went up the road to the Huntland Hornets. His first year he was beaten by the Moore county team
lead by his oldest son John. That would be the last time he would coach against
his son and he moved the family to Huntland TN. While coaching Huntland he
compiled a 70-7 record after losing four games his first year. Later he would
take on the job at the University of the South
Sewanee Tigers in Sewanee
TN. He
would eventually coach them for 21 years and post a 93-74-5 record. Twice the Tigers were unbeaten and
Shirley would become a charter member of the Tennessee Sports Hall of
Fame 1966
and division 3 Coach of the Year 1973.
Elizabeth meanwhile taught elementary
school and
kept the youngsters in line. The two of them shaped the city's young population.
They are both deceased and buried in the Moore County cemetery.
They had 6 children John, Joe, Bill, Shirley
Ann, Larry and Bob. John the
oldest is one of the best known as the runner-up
for Heisman when he played for the University of TN. He went on to coach at
Iowa, Pittsburg and Tennessee. He is now in Pittsburg helping the Panthers upright
the once proud program.
Joe
played for Florida State
University and help lead that team to many wins including one over
UT and his
brother Bill. He received his Law degree from Vanderbilt and now is a lobbyist in Nashville TN
for the
Tennessee Legislature.
Bill of course played for
UT and
coached until his untimely
demise in 1965. UT now presents the Bill Majors award
to the UT player that best exemplifies the dedication to UT football as shown by
Bill Majors during his career there.
Shirley Ann played High
School
basketball and married Tommy Husband. They now
reside in Chattanooga TN and Tommy is a Manager with the Chattanooga Tent
Company.
Larry
played for his father Shirley at
the University of the South and received his teaching certificate. He helped his
father coaching for a few years at the University of the South then moved on to
South Junior High School in Cowan TN were he taught and coached for many years.
He now lives
in Estill Springs and is retired.
Bob
played for UT and is one of the
most remembered Majors as he played last and well. He was All American and
considered one of the best Defensive backs to ever play at UT collecting ten
interceptions one year. He now lives in Chattanooga TN
and Sells for Electric
Machines INC.
The Majors family was
inducted into
the TN Sports Hall of Fame in 1966 and most continue to live in Tennessee today.
