Kicking Game
Basic concepts, formations and responsibilities

If you coach youth Football, the only kicking you'll do is kick off and kick return. Most small players are unable the punt the ball far enough to make it worth your while. Same goes for Xtra points and field goals. SO! Go for it! On fourth down! AND use goal line defense to stop the other team on fourth down. If done right, a team should have a 4th down defense, they use, just to get the ball back.

Playbook for kick return blocking

XO Pointers: Side return.
1 Right or left returns are very difficult if the kicking team kicks deep in the opposite corner you are returning to.
2 One man has to seal the contain man inside.
3 The two return men do opposite jobs. One returns the other blocks first man he sees.
4 This looks like like the players are blocking outside but they are supposed and turn and make a wall.

Kick Off Return Right

XO Pointers:
1 Run with a 5 man front or a 6 man.
2 Have the middle return man take 1rst man to the right of the kicker.
3 Tell the players to be sneaky and not let the defenders know they are coming after them.
4 Tap each player on the shoulder and ask him to tell you who he has.

XO Pointers:
1's are crazy kamikaze wedge busters.
2's Keep their lanes and make good choices.
3's Play contain man
4 Is your fastest man who can tackle.
5 Is your kicker Who tries not to get hurt and plays deep.

XO Pointers: Punt Block
1 Normally a punt block will be called to one side. Block left or right. Block left means the outside block will come from the left, but the inside block may very well come from the right. A coach usually looks for a weakness on the inside and formulates a inside point of attack to go with block left or right.
2 Over load the gaps and get the inside man to try to pull the blocker inside and allow the sprint man a clear angle to the punter.
3 When you line up in block don't worry about returns or split out defenders. Its their job to block you and they should check back to a blocking set if there are men outside. If they don't Yipee!
4 The outside block man should aim about 3 yards in front of where the punter stands and practice this over and over until they get a good feel. Practice laying out in full dive position like your making the block. This hurts so you must be tough not just fast.
5 On the inside treat it the same way. Aim three guys for a gap and have the two outside guys pull the blockers out so the inside blocker gets a get out of jail free card and clear path to punter.
6 Always play on quick man about 7 yards deep to watch for fakes.

XO Pointers:  Middle return
1 Each punt return man takes a player and funnels him outside.
2 Many times it is good to come up and jack the hard to give them a slow start then turn and run keeping and inside position then block them out down field.

XO Pointers: Side return
1 Return men run up and hand check the defenders then peal off down the side forming a wall.
2 Outside man funnels runner inside the wall. Very important.
3 Punter lines up 12-15 yards deep.

XO Pointers:
1 The outside players sprint to the ball and try to make a play. Expect to be funneled outside. Fight for a straight line to the ball.
2 All linemen point to the player they are responsible for starting with the center working out. When all are accounted for the Up Back looks at the punter to make sure he is ready, then screams "READY".
3 The play goes on ball movement.
4 The deep snapper looks between his legs at the punter and when the punter shakes his hands in a ready to catch the ball position the snapper knows he can snap at his convenience. The deep snapper then looks back at his defender, gets sets and snaps the ball ready to get jacked and in control.
5 Linemen count to 1000-3 before leaving the line of scrimmage to avoid being called for ineligible man downfield.
6 After the block and the count all lineman fan out into their lanes. Ends are always contain men first. Don't try to be a hero. We have the two outside guys doing that.
7 Up Back checks inside gaps first for leaks then take the first man he sees.
8 Some play with two Up backs. Its you choice.

XO Pointers: Field Goal / Xtra point
1 Linemen have NO-SPLITS toe to toe.
2 On the snap of the ball all blockers turn inside and block the inside gaps. Many coach's tell them to put their shoulder on the on the inside mans hip at the snap of the ball.
3  Because everyone is blocking down, the outside blocker/wing-back, lines up with his inside foot, inside the ends outside foot.
4 The outside blocker/Wing-back Always protects the inside gap first when pressured.
