Playbook for 52 Defense alignments and techniques

XO Pointers:
1 Ends keep outside shoulder free and shuck the tight end like he is  starting a fight on the playground. Read the end and find play flow.
2 Tackle does the same and squeezes the line of scrimmage if the tackle blocks down. Don't get trapped. Squeeze the line and don't let the tackle get out to block the Linebacker.
3 Nose man and both Linebackers split the two A-GAPS. nose has half of each and each linebacker splits the other half.
4 Linebackers read the guard and run up field if the guard blocks down. Hit with the inside shoulder and push the runner inside towards pursuit.
5 Most 50 defenses play zone with 2 or 3 deep.
6 In Youth Football many coaches bring up the strong safety as a extra linebacker.

XO Pointers:
1 Strong safety rolls up and plays flats.
2 Week side end becomes a LOOK end and plays the flats.
3 Corner, Free and Corner play deep thirds. First step is ALWAYS a thankless, two back with DB's.  ALWAYS!  Two steps back.

XO Pointers:
1 Roll the strong side corner up and he plays flats.
2 Look end plays flats back side.
3 In the 2 deep zone, use the strong safety to gamble. Blitz ANYWHERE. Use him however u like. Put him wherever you like. You might even use him to man up on a dangerous back.

In youth football I've found it best to play man defense with the corner backs and teach the technique of looking through to the QB and feeling the receiver. If the receiver tries to block they will know right away. It's a run. Drop ground, use your hands, and make sure he's not faking a block only to get up field on a play action pass. A corner back has to watch out and stay at home if the receiver motions inside. Most of the time the offense will come right back at them and run for the sidelines. Contain. Contain.

60 Defense

60 Defense Good for goal line and short yardage.
60 read. All players read the football. Play gap defense though. Always assign gaps with the linemen. Make them accountable and give em knowledge so they don't have to think. Flow to/ Here's your hole. Flow away / Here's your hole.

60 Pinch linebackers man to man on backs. Usually strong side backer mans on fullback and weak side backer on tailback. Or first back to your side. Corners man up on ANY motion out their side and first back to them. Free safety runs to football. Linebackers fist step is outside scraping off the defensive ends' tail.

60 Angle. Flow right. Back side linebacker takes inside gap.

60 Angle. Flow left. Backside backer takes inside hole.

60 Slant is of course the same as above but the line has the opposite gaps.

70 Defense

This is a, line up in your gap, defense. The middle linebacker taps the nose man on the hip and takes the opposite gap. This is a popular and useful defense in Youth football. Effective against a team with a poor line, or a team that can't throw.

The defensive end must contain and look for the bootleg run by the Quarterback.
If the other team comes out with split ends the end goes with them and the inside backer backs up one step. The ends play one yard outside last man on line of scrimmage. Sometimes the free safety comes up and splits the difference with the Linebacker. This is gimmicky and should be used sparingly under adult supervision.
