Removed paid or charged off debts Credit Help

After my divorce I ran into some credit card troubles.  I have late payments and used the services of a debt agency , but then was lent money by a friend to make settlements and pay the debt.  The debts show as paid or charged off.  I am not sure how to remove these or how to contact the companies to ask for removal
