I currently have a service that I pay for that alerts me to anything changing on my credit report. Two days ago I received and e-mail that my credit report had lowered by 40 points – upon looking I saw that I had 2 separate debts from 2002 ( that were never there before). I called the collection agency that was provided and they told me that it was from Sprint (Nextel). I had an account with them that I closed and paid off in 2002. Never heard a word from them over 7 years until this. I told them that I was not going to pay this as it was not accurate information and that after 7 years it showed up on my report – just did not make sense – must be some type of error. I was told that I needed to dispute the charges by writing a letter and then they would send it to Sprint. Is this even legal? I mean what prevents companies from putting debts on your credit report that are not valid? Am I handling this correctly? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

there is nothing to stop this from happeing other than legal actions
I would say it should be illegal but no unless you prosecute
