Collection removed if I pay original creditor

My question is, I’ve yet to come upon information about how to get collections off of your report if I pay off the original creditor. All of my old debt from original creditors has been, “charged-off” and sent to collection agencies, but I’m wanting to pay them in full from the original creditors.

My highest score was 566 or so several months ago, then I opened up a secured credit card, $300, with Bank of America and now my highest score is 588. Back in the day, 2002, I started building good credit, it was 666 and after about 18 months American Express offered me their “Gold Card” and I accepted and around that time my score was about 702. Soon after I lost my job and it all went south.

I also have a federal tax lien against me because in 2002 I traded stock a lot and now have a judgement of over $360,000, but I called the IRS yesterday and they said I just had to file a return with schedule D and hopefully it’ll be taken care of and removed off my report. The lien was filed in Nov. 2005. I did not turn a profit in trading, so I shouldn’t have to pay anything… I hope.

There also seems to be some collection agencies that have made the date on my debt more recent – doesn’t this also bring down my score? I stopped paying my debt in the fall of 2003, but some on my report say 2006 or so.
